Hornbill Festival 2026 from Guwahati — Overland Route & Package
Guwahati is the most flexible base for the Hornbill Festival — cheap flights from across India, easy overland route to Kohima, and natural pairing with Kaziranga or Shillong. Here is how to do the festival from GAU.
Guwahati to Kohima — the route
350 km via NH-27 and NH-29. Drive time: 9–10 hours direct, or split with an overnight halt in Dimapur (210 km / 5 hours from Guwahati). Most travellers prefer the overnight stop — driving Nagaland mountain roads after dark is not recommended.
Train option Guwahati → Dimapur
Multiple daily trains, journey time 5–7 hours. The Kamrup Express, Brahmaputra Mail and Rajdhani all stop at Dimapur. Useful if you want to skip the long road and pick up a private cab from Dimapur station.
4-day Guwahati-to-Guwahati itinerary
Day 1: Guwahati–Dimapur–Kohima (overnight in Kohima). Day 2: Festival at Kisama. Day 3: Khonoma + War Cemetery. Day 4: Half-day Kisama, drive Kohima–Guwahati (long day). Add a 5th day if you can — the long drive on Day 4 is tiring otherwise.
Package cost from Guwahati
Land-only, twin-share, 3N/4D Guwahati to Guwahati: ₹26,000–₹38,000 per person. Add Kaziranga (2 nights) before the festival for ~₹12,000 extra per person — the most popular extension.
