What to Expect at the Hornbill Festival 2026 — Day by Day

The Hornbill Festival runs from 1st to 10th December every year at Kisama Heritage Village. It's organised by the Government of Nagaland and brings together all 17 major Naga tribes — Angami, Ao, Chakhesang, Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Kuki, Lotha, Phom, Pochury, Rengma, Sangtam, Sumi, Yimchunger, Zeliang and others — each in their own morung (traditional tribal hut).

Mornings at Kisama

The arena opens around 9 AM. Each tribe performs traditional war dances, folk songs and rituals in rotation — the Angami's Hekuyi, the Konyak's headhunter dance, the Ao's Tsüngrem Mong. Get there early; the front rows fill up by 10:30.

Walk through the morungs between performances. Elders sit by the fire, demonstrate weaving and bamboo work, and pour rice beer (zutho) to visitors. This is the best part of the day — slower, more personal than the main stage.

Naga Food Court

Smoked pork with bamboo shoot, axone (fermented soybean), Naga king chilli chutney, sticky rice in banana leaves, fish in fermented bamboo. Each tribe runs its own stall. Vegetarian options exist but are limited — Nagaland is a meat-eating culture and the food court reflects that.

Indigenous Games & Crafts

Traditional Naga wrestling (Aki Kiti), pole climbing, archery, chilli-eating contests and the famous Naga log drum demonstrations happen through the day on the lower grounds. The craft bazaar sells Naga shawls, beadwork, wood carvings and miniature daos.

Night Events

The Hornbill Night Carnival in Kohima town runs every evening from 1st–10th December with food stalls, music and street performances. The Hornbill International Rock Contest (4th–9th December) at the Indira Gandhi Stadium is one of India's oldest battle-of-the-bands and brings rock acts from across the Northeast.

On 1st and 10th December the opening and closing ceremonies feature a grand procession of all tribes in full regalia — don't miss these days if you can plan around them.

Beyond Kisama

Use a free morning to visit the Kohima War Cemetery, the World War II Museum at Kisama, or drive out to Khonoma — Asia's first green village, about an hour from Kohima. We build at least one of these into every itinerary.
